blue sky

August 19th, 2010

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. Using a process developed by Helice Bridges of Del Mar, California, she called each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First she told them how the student made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters which read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference.”

Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread his acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honored whom and report back to the class in about a week.

One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and said, “We’re doing a class project on recognition, and we’d like you to go out, find somebody to honor, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what happened.”

Later that day the juniorexecutive went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would he give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, “Well, sure.”

The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss’s jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, “Would you do me a favor? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honoring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people.”

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine. He thinks I’m a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says ‘Who I Am Makes A Difference’ on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would like to honor with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honor you.

“My days are really hectic and when I come home I don’t pay a lot of attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and, well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You’re a great kid and I love you!”

The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn’t stop crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, “I was planning on committing suicide tomorrow, Dad, because I didn’t think you loved me. Now I don’t need to.”

Eight easy ways to get better fuel economy from your car

August 11th, 2010

Times are getting tougher, economically speaking and most Americans are getting into a serious thrifty mindset. With the cost of living going up and job security a real concern to most of us, it’s time to batten down the budget hatches and save money in any way we can. In the old days, when you could fill up a gas guzzler for $20, it was no big deal. Shelling out $50 for the same amount of gas today is a bite. Gas is a major expense in most households, making better fuel economy a good place to scrutinize in your budget. Here are eight easy ways to guarantee better fuel economy, no matter what type of vehicle you drive.

Proper maintenance of your vehicle is essential to getting better fuel economy. Neglecting maintenance means your car is not operating at maximum efficiency. When your car has to work harder to do its job, your fuel economy suffers. Let’s look at these various maintenance tasks.

Vehicles need water, antifreeze, oil and brake fluid levels to be checked periodically. Check your water levels in your battery as well. Make this a weekly check, especially in warm weather. Keeping these fluids topped off is a substantial step towards better fuel economy. Not only do you save on gas, but it’s far less likely to find yourself stranded on the road. If you’ve ever been stuck on the side of a highway with an overheated engine, you know what I’m talking about.

A Baby Dies and Agencies Pass the Buck

June 29th, 2010

A baby died. Her mother was critically injured when a tree branch fell in Central Park Saturday. And today agencies that seem to bear some responsibility for what happened were passing the buck.

We sought comment from the Central Park Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the city Parks Department-. Nobody could — or would — enlighten us.

The tragedy happened just outside the zoo. It was a beautiful June day and the father, Mike Ricciutti, was taking pictures of his wife and daughter, six-month-old Gianna Ricciutti. There was a cracking sound, the mother fell and the baby flew out of her arms.

A statement from a city Parks Department spokeswoman is perplexing. Vickie Karp says: The investigation as to why the limb fell is ongoing, as is a review of specific responsibility for tree maintenance.

If the department doesnt know who is responsible for tree maintenance, who does?

This little bit of flimflam points up one of the unfortunate developments of recent years. The Parks Department, a city agency, has farmed out the responsibility for overseeing 26,000 trees to the Central Park Conservancy. In addition, the Wildlife Conservation Society has jurisdiction over the zoo. And where does the Parks Department fit into this picture? Apparently these private, non-profit agencies are loosely under the citys supervision.

Geoffrey Croft, the leader of a group called NYC Park Advocates, said he has received complaints from citizens about park maintenance for months.

Jet lag cures | Gadling.com

June 28th, 2010

I pretend to cure jet lag by staying up late the night before I go on a trip. I can’t help it. I’m still packing and cleaning the house. I call it my hamster-on-a-wheel routine. There are more effective ways to combat feeling like your head might roll off –or that feeling like you’re listing sideways as you walk through sludge.

Here are some tips that I don’t follow because–well, I just don’t. But if you do, you’ll feel better than I tend to feel after a long, international flight.

Find out what time it is where you are going a week before your trip. Gradually, stay up a half-an-hour each day to get closer to the time that it is at the place where you are going. That sounds like it involves math and planning. Lot’s of luck. Sleep on the plane. And miss the movies? I do about half and half, depending on how tired I am after staying up packing and cleaning. Bring a pillow. Okay, but I thought there were pillows you can use on the plane. Don’t eat the pasta. It will make you bloat. I tend to eat what is put in front of me. I like the surprise when I take off the tinfoil. Take jet lag medication. Blech! I’m not too fond of medicine. Take a nap when you reach your destination, but not too long. If I went to sleep, there’s no way, I’d wake up easily. I’d rather pretend my body doesn’t feel strange.

For the full advice and the reasons why, click here. I am a lousy study, but perhaps, you’ll do better.

Rare Cells Linked to Pediatric Cancers | Free Blog at Com-x2

June 28th, 2010

They measured levels of circulating endothelial cells and endothelial progenitor cells in 23 children with localized cancer, 22 children with metastatic cancer and 20 healthy children. Circulating endothelial cells are rare cells shed from the lining of blood vessels after vascular damage. Endothelial progenitor cells are precursors of circulating endothelial cells.

“Not only were these cells found in higher levels in [cancer] patients compared to healthy volunteers, but endothelial progenitor cells were found in strikingly higher amounts in patients with metastatic disease,” Francoise Farace, director of the department of biology of circulating cells at the Gustave Roussy Cancer Institute, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research.

The finding that children with metastatic cancer had much higher levels of these cells than healthy children was a surprise, the researchers indicated.

“This implies that these endothelial cells most likely play a role in the development of cancer in children,” Farace said. “We also observed a large range of cell levels in patients with various tumor types. In some cases, very high levels were observed, which means their role may be very important.”

The study appears July 15 in Clinical Cancer Research.

Further research is needed to confirm whether these cells play a role in metastasis. If so, the researchers suggested, testing levels of the cells could improve early detection of metastatic cancer, and the cells could be targeted by new drugs to prevent the spread of cancer.
